How do I care for my Boots?

Give your Blundstones the love they deserve!

Whilst Blundstone boots are designed to last, it is vital that you care for them to help prolong their life and lustre.

Blundstone boots are made from leathers with various finishes, suede, nubuck, waxed nubuck, Vegan onMicro® Microfibre and canvas. Each needs specific care in order to keep them clean.

Follow our tips below to properly care for your Blundstone boots.

Cleaning Full Grain Leather

  • First, remove any caked on dirt on your boots with a soft bristled brush or damp cloth, and leave your boots to air dry. Please ensure that your boots are away from direct sunlight or any heaters, as they will dry out the leather.
  • Apply leather polish, spray or cream to the leather to help maintain your boots. If you are using a polish for the first time, try it on an inconspicuous area of the boot to check whether it alters the colour or appearance.
  • If using a cream, apply a small amount to a polishing cloth or brush and rub onto the shoe in circular motions.
  • Wipe away the residue and again leave to dry.

Cleaning Waxed Nubuck and Oiled Nubuck

  • Waxed nubuck includes the Rustic Leather and Pre-Worn Leather Finish styles like #585, #587, #2446 and #2422 found in our Classics and Clogs Series.
  • Oiled nubuck styles include #2340 and #2544 both found in our Classics Series.
  • Follow the cleaning guide above remove dirt with a damp cloth and allow time to dry.
  • Apply the Rustic Renovating Cream and Waterproof Spray to waxed and oiled nubuck leathers. If you are using a cream or spray for the first time, try it on an inconspicuous area of the boot to check whether it alters the colour or appearance.
  • The non-pigmented Rustic Renovating Cream is designed to care for coated nubuck leathers like waxed nubuck Rustic leathers and the Pre-worn leather finish. It should not be applied to plain nubuck leather.

Cleaning Nubuck

  • This method of cleaning is for nubuck leathers with no coatings or finishes.
  • Use a dry nubuck cloth to remove any surface dirt. Then brush gently with a nubuck brush. Use a circular motion, taking care not to spend more than a few seconds on any area.
  • If you have any scuffs, remove them with a gum eraser. Simply rub the scuff with the eraser and wipe away the rubber debris. Alternatively, try a spray-on nubuck cleaning solution, then wipe the area with a nubuck cloth. It is important to follow the instructions on such products and ensure it is tested on a small area before wider application.
  • Dab the shoes with a clean towel to remove any excess moisture and leave to air dry.
  • Apply a nubuck water and stain repellent on the boot to help prolong the life of your footwear.
  • Remember, it’s a good idea to waterproof boots regularly to protect the leather from staining. If the leather is wet, let it dry naturally prior to cleaning or using any cleaning substances.

Cleaning Suede, Waxed Suede and Oiled Suede

  • Use a suede brush, to scrub off any surface stains or dirt.
  • If you have any scuff marks, you can remove them with a gum eraser. Simply rub the scuff with the eraser and wipe away the rubber debris.
  • Then dampen a suede brush with a little water and pour a small amount of suede and leather cleaner on it. Then clean the shoe, focussing your attention on any particularly stained spots.
  • Dab the shoes with a clean towel to remove any excess moisture and leave to air dry.
  • Once dry, apply a water and stain repellent spray on the shoe to help prolong their life. Some suedes are best treated prior to wear if they have not been treated. If you are using a spray for the first time, try it on an inconspicuous area of the boot to check whether it alters the colour or appearance.
  • It’s a good idea to waterproof boots regularly to protect the leather from staining. If the leather is wet, let it dry naturally prior to cleaning or using any cleaning substances.

Cleaning Brushed Leathers

  • Wipe boots clean with a damp cloth or use a soft bristled brush to remove dirt. If using a damp cloth leave your boots to air dry away from direct sunlight or any heaters.
  • Remove and wash the footbed separately in mild soap and water and air dry flat.

There are two kinds of Brushed Leather.
  • For Vintage Brown styles #2440 and #2434 apply a light black polish to the areas you wish to revive.
  • Apply Waterproof Spray for added protection. If you are using a spray or polish for the first time, try on an inconspicuous area of the boot to check whether it alters the colour or appearance.
  • For the Originals #2506 Coffee Brush, wipe boots clean with a damp cloth or soft bristled brush to remove dirt. If using a damp cloth leave your boots to air dry away from direct sunlight or any heaters.
  • Apply Waterproof Spray to help protect the leather. If you are using a spray for the first time, try on an inconspicuous area of the boot to check whether it alters the colour or appearance.

Cleaning Vegan onMicro® Microfibre

  • Wipe boots clean with a damp cloth.
  • Leave your boots to air dry away from direct sunlight or any heaters.
  • Remove and wash the footbed separately in mild soap and water and air dry flat.
  • No creams are required as the vegan boots' upper material is onMicro® microfibre.

Cleaning Canvas

  • Scrub away any patches of dirt with a soft bristled brush. Or, if you have one lying around, you can even use an old toothbrush.
  • Dip a cloth or soft bristled brush into some warm water and clean the entire surface of the boot.
  • Put some tissue paper inside your boots and leave them to air dry, to help maintain their shape when drying.
  • Never put your canvas Blundstones in a tumble dryer or they risk shrivelling and damaging the sole.

Cleaning the Sole

  • Remove any large pieces of dirt and debris from your boots.
  • Use a stiff nylon brush to clean between the tread to remove any excess dirt. Should dirt remain, soak your boots in a shallow bath/bucket of warm water for two hours.
  • Again, use a stiff nylon brush to remove.
  • Finally, use a damp cloth for an overall clean before allowing to dry naturally.

Extra Tips

  • Never dry your boots by an open fire or artificial heat source, as this will cause the leather to harden, shrink and crack. It can even cause the leather to pull away from the sole. Always dry your boots naturally at room temperature.
  • Always store your boots in a well ventilated, cool place away from sunlight or any heat which will tarnish the leather.
  • You should use a leather conditioner on your full grain and oil tanned leather boots whenever they need them. If your boots are looking a little scuffed and worn, always remember to use a conditioner. The Blundstone Polishing Pad is an easy to apply leather conditioner.
  • Similarly, you should use waterproof spray to protect suede and nubuck boots when they are looking worn, and before you wear them on a rainy or sunny day.
  • Avoid exposing your boots to chemical contamination. Solvents, strong acids and alkalis will do irreparable damage on leather, whilst commonplace substances like milk and salt are also highly damaging. In the event of exposure, clean the boots immediately.
  • You should only use good quality cleaning substances and ones specific to the material of your boots.
Where is Blundstone based?

Since their inception in 1870, Blundstone has been a wholly-owned Tasmanian company based in the city of Hobart.

Now, over 150 years later, they remain firmly committed to their island home. The headquarters are in Hobart and house our design, sales, admin, marketing, logistics and executive team.

Blundstones manufacture their gumboots in Tasmania, with their factory based at HQ. They produce 400,000 pairs of gumboots each year. Their leather products are produced in Vietnam, India, China, Mexico and Thailand to continue to supply the quality boots you know and love for an ever-expanding global market.

Where are Blundstone boots made?

Blundstone is 100% Tasmanian privately-owned and a family company. Our HQ is in Hobart and they also manufacture their gumboots in Tasmania, with the factory based at HQ. The factory has the capacity to produce 400,000 pairs of gumboots each year.

To continue to supply the quality boots you know and love for an ever-expanding global market, they work closely with five key manufacturing partners around the globe to produce their leather products in Vietnam, India, China, Mexico and Thailand. Blundstone choose their partners very carefully—they must be satisfied that they comply with strict requirements regarding how they manage their business, treat their people and consider their impact on the environment. They employ their own quality inspectors on-site at all manufacturing locations to ensure standards are maintained.

As a family-owned company with a long and proud heritage, they have a firm commitment to behaving as an ethical global citizen.

What is Blundstone's commitment to animal welfare?

At Blundstone, they believe that animals should never be subjected to harsh or cruel treatment. Taking the lives of animals must at all times be conducted using the quickest and least painful and non-traumatic methods as possible. With the majority of their footwear and ancillaries made from leather, they pay particular attention to the countries and sources their leather comes from.

What is Blundstone's commitment to the environment?

Blundstone is committed to manufacturing processes that are environmentally compliant and they actively work to improve our business practices and minimise their impact on the environment.

They only do business with suppliers in countries that they believe are sufficiently active in monitoring, and improving, environmental impact and practices. As an example, their boxes are 100% recyclable and use 100% recycled materials. Environmental impact assessments are undertaken on all our footwear manufacturing sites. Since the instigation of this process, no breaches have been identified.

Leather is considered a renewable material, and they currently source 95% of our leather from sustainably certified tanneries. They also choose to be a member of the Leather Working Group for a range of reasons, the key being access to their environmental assessment tools, audit protocol and rating system, and third party services. These systems also help to encourage upstream suppliers to improve their own environmental practices.
