13 Things you probably don't know about Crocs
1. Crocs were designed to be boating shoes. With the first model being called Beach. It had had many of the design traits of today's Crocs being lightweight, waterproof and slip resistant. They were first sold at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida in November 2002.
2. Each Crocs clog has exactly 13 holes - excluding the vents on the sides. These allow for drainage and for air to circulate your feet, aiding in evaporation.
3. Some hospitals in the UK & US banned Crocs causing a rift with nurses - this was due to the holes in the upper and side. Crocs has fully enclosed versions such as the Bistro and Specialist Vent which fully enclose the foot. They also are easily cleaned.
4. In 2017 Balenciaga put plaform Crocs on the catwalk leading to gasps from the audience. British Vogue wrote "Crocs have been many things - practical, comfy, unisex and unbreakable - but they've never been cool. Until now."
5. Crocs can be recycled. In the US Crocs have launched a recycle program allowing customers to drop off their old Crocs at donation points in stores or return by mail.
6. By 2022 Crocs had sold over 850m pairs of Crocs. And they are adding over 125m pairs each year.
7. In the 2006 movie Idiocracy everyone wears Crocs. The costumer designer for the film had a limited budget and thought that Crocs looked futuristic but were too stupid to become popular in real life.
8. Crocs have been sported on the red carpets of the Emmys by Nicholas Braun, at the Grammys by Justin Bieber and at the Oscars by Questlove.
9. Crocs collaborated with KFC. In 2020, releasing fried chicken scented Crocs with drumsticks jibbitz. They sell for an average £110 on secondary marketplaces.
10. The Crocs Crocodile which you find on most pairs of crocs is called Duke.
11. There are 390 Crocs stores around the world. Including in island nations such as St Kitts and the British Virgin Islands whose populations are just 47,755 and 31,358.
12. Crocs are sold in over 90 countries around the world. The USA and Americas remain their largest market.
13. There is a Crocs Day. Celebrated on the 23rd October each year during Croctober.
